Anti-graft war: Wake up from your slumber, Ribadu tells ICPC

A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu , says the EFCC has done fairly well .
Ribadu , who stated this at a town hall meeting organised by the Shehu Musa Yar ’Adua Foundation in Abuja , on Monday , however , advised the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission and the police to wake up from their slumber.
At the meeting tagged , “ A spanner in the wheel of corruption ,” Ribadu said the number of graft cases in the country was high .
He stated , “ The EFCC alone has over 3 ,800 ongoing corruption cases in the courts, not to talk of other cases .
“ They ( EFCC ) have done fairly well . You need to see what these people go through to get one case to court . It is hell because some people will do everything possible to make sure you don ’t drag them to court . They ( EFCC operatives ) do not even sleep .
“ Let the ICPC wake up from its slumber and start doing something too; same with government ’s ministries. There are lots of government ’s agencies that are not doing anything to support the fight against corruption .
“ The Nigeria Police Force should also wake up and do what the EFCC is doing ; same with the other law enforcement agencies and the judiciary. Why are we not getting the convictions in the corruption cases ? They have a role to play as well . ”
Making further clarifications on his comments at the event , Ribadu , in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, said , “ What I am saying is that we all , as Nigerians , must contribute our individual quota to the war against corruption. It is not something that should be left for the EFCC alone . The ICPC, the police , individuals and groups should take up the fight in order for it to succeed .”
At the event , the former EFCC chairman said the country had recorded achievements in the anti- graft war .
He stated , “ Nigeria is the only country that has successfully recovered stolen money taken abroad . Other countries in Africa and other places have tried but they never succeeded. ”
The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Mr . Waziri Adio , said Nigeria should first tackle institutional graft to solve the problem of corruption .
On his part , the Deputy President of the Senate , Senator Ike Ekweremadu , stated that only an institutionalised approach to the anti- corruption crusade by the current administration could guarantee success.
